Donkey Kong è un personaggio creato da Shigeru Miyamoto nel 1981, protagonista dell’ominima serie di fortunati videogiochi.
Nel 1983, due anni dopo la pubblicazione del gioco targato Nintendo e contemporaneamente al successo commerciale dello stesso, la Kids Stuff Records (etichetta americana specializzata in musiche per bambini e nota per la naïveté dei suoi prodotti) rilasciò un omonimo LP, oggi merce molto rara, dedicato a un pubblico prettamente infantile.
Il disco, attraverso i sette brani che lo compongono, narra la storia dello scimmione in fuga dallo zoo e di Mario, originariamente noto come Jumpman, qui alla sua prima apparizione videoludica, che cerca di riportarlo in gabbia.

Musicalmente l’album è piuttosto insignificante, la maggior parte dei brani infatti sembrano jingle allungati fino allo spasimo e soffrono di una ripetitività eccessiva oltre che di arrangiamenti estremamente scarni.
È curioso il fatto che la voce che impersonifica Mario (che in questo frangente veste i panni di un pizzaiolo anziché di un idraulico come vuole l’iconografia classica del celebre eroe baffuto italo-giapponese) dovrebbe avere un accento italiano, ma ricorda invece quella di Borat. Non perdetevi la incredibile “Mario Delivers” e capirete alla perfezione di che cosa stiamo parlando.
Se non ve ne frega niente dei videogiochi passate oltre. Se invece come noi avete passato ore a cercare di tirare giù quell’adorabile scimmione nel tentativo di salvare Pauline, questo disco accenderà in voi una piccola scintilla di nostalgia.
